Looking for a fresh start this spring? Maybe it’s time to begin one of those time-honored traditions of the season – spring cleaning! Regardless of whether you find cleaning to be daunting or doable, one thing is for sure: there’s nothing like a clean, organized house to get us amped up for all that spring has to offer.
If you know it’s time to get out mop and broom, but you’re feeling a bit puzzled on how to begin, worry not! Here’s six easy spring cleaning tips to help get you started and keep you on task.
1. Have a game plan.
Make a checklist to keep track of everything that needs to be done in each room. Then decide on a logical way to get each task completed. You may find it easier to go room by room, instead of trying to clean the whole house all at one. Plan it out and see how much you can get done in a day, and adjust your timetable accordingly. Cleaning can take a while, so be prepared to invest time.
2. Start by decluttering.
After all, the less you own, the less you have to clean! Go through your closets and donate any unwanted clothes or shoes. Sift through your papers and shred any unwanted documents. Go through your junk drawer and throw away the actual junk. Purging yourself of unwanted items makes it easier for you to have a clear, fresh space to work in.
3. Research, research, research.
Before you jump into cleaning, make sure you’re armed with the know-how to make your spring cleaning as stress-free as possible. Go online and do some research into cleaning tips and hacks, and learn how to do everything from removing stubborn limescale deposits to making your own organic household cleaners. Once you’ve got a better understanding of the task in front of you, you can roll up your sleeves and get to work.
4. Dare to deep clean.
What’s spring cleaning if not the chance to go above and beyond? Use this opportunity to clean the things that you never even think about. Scrub the baseboards, clean the oven, wipe down the windows, shampoo the rugs, and wash the air vent grates. You’d be surprised at how much these little things can make a difference in the cleanliness of your home.
5. Keep it fun!
Who says cleaning can’t be fun? Find ways to keep yourself entertained so you don’t become bored by the monotony of cleaning. Put on your favorite music, stream your favorite television shows, or catch up with an old friend over speaker phone. You can even get your spouse and children involved with your spring cleaning. Not only is this a great way to bond with your family, it will also divide up the work and make the process less time consuming in the long run.
6. Add life back into the room.
Once you finish cleaning a room to your liking, don’t forget to go back and add in those little homey touches. Plug in air fresheners or light your favorite candles. Add a new potted plant or a vase of fresh flowers to your kitchen table. Place a few new magazines on the coffee table, or purchase some new throw pillows to give your couch a pop of color. Doing these things will make your space feel more alive, and it’s a great way to reward yourself for all your hard work.
